Farmers are often some of the first people asked to test new agricultural technology.

They provide the acres. The equipment. The time. The data. And, perhaps most importantly, the real-world knowledge needed to determine whether an idea actually works.

But if that technology eventually becomes a successful company, should the farmer who helped build it get more than a free product and a thank-you?

Taking AgTech From an Idea to the Farm

There’s a big difference between creating something that works in a university lab or garage and building something farmers are actually willing to use and pay for.

That gap is where AgLaunch comes in.

Through AgLaunch Farmers LLC and its partnership with AgVentures Alliance, farmers help evaluate agricultural startups before and during their development.

Participating producers can help select companies, conduct trials on their farms, provide feedback and determine whether a new product actually solves a meaningful problem.

What Makes an Ag Startup Successful?

A $50 Million Bet on Rural Innovation

The episode also explores the newly licensed $50 million Farmers Innovation Fund, designed to help support agricultural startups while keeping farmers and rural communities at the center of the innovation process.

Access to capital is one of the biggest hurdles for young companies.

But where that money comes from—and who benefits if a company succeeds—can shape how a startup grows.

The Farmers Innovation Fund represents an effort to connect investment capital with agricultural innovation while maintaining a strong connection to the producers and rural communities those technologies are intended to serve.

Seeing New Technology Work on the Farm

Mark brings the conversation back to what all of this looks like from a farmer's perspective.

He shares examples of technologies he's worked with on his own operation, including Grain Weevil and Spornado.

Grain Weevil is an example of technology designed around a serious farm safety challenge: keeping people out of dangerous grain-bin environments.

Spornado approaches another problem—crop disease detection—by helping producers identify disease pressure earlier and potentially make more informed management decisions.

These technologies address very different challenges, but both demonstrate why real-world farm testing matters.

Something can look promising on paper.

The real test comes when you put it in the hands of a farmer.

Agriculture needs innovation.

But the people developing new agricultural technology also need farmers willing to open their operations, share their experience and help turn ideas into products that work in the real world.
