Brian Hefty on ROI, Agronomy, and Lessons That Last a Lifetime
In this episode of the Farm4Profit Podcast, we welcome Brian Hefty, South Dakota farmer and co-host of Ag PhD TV and Radio, to talk about smart farming strategies, building one of the most respected agronomy platforms in agriculture, and the life lessons that continue to guide him today.
Brian shares his story of growing up on a livestock and crop farm, learning discipline and decision-making from his father, and eventually launching the Hefty Seed Company with his brother Darren. Now operating in 12 states with over 50 locations, Hefty Seed is ranked as the 7th largest crop protection retailer and 11th largest seed dealer in the country—proof of a farmer-first mindset that prioritizes trust, results, and innovation.
We dig into the importance of return on investment (ROI) in agriculture, and why farmers should focus less on input costs and more on profit-driving decisions, like increasing soil sampling frequency. According to Brian, soil testing remains one of the most underutilized tools on the farm, and he explains how smarter nutrient management directly impacts yields and sustainability.
Brian also reflects on his recently published book, 100 an Hour Jobs: Lessons from Dad, which compiles powerful values around time, productivity, and purpose that shaped his personal and professional path. He credits much of his success to his father's early guidance and his unwavering Christian faith, which continues to be the foundation for both family and business life.
Looking ahead, Brian previews the highly anticipated Ag PhD Field Day on July 31, an educational event that brings thousands of farmers together to explore the latest in agronomy, precision technology, and crop performance strategies. He also teases the 2025 return of Cultivate in Fargo, another event designed to inspire and connect the next generation of agricultural leaders.
Finally, Brian highlights how Ag PhD is expanding its digital footprint through AcresTV, podcasts, and social media—making it easier than ever for farmers to stay informed, no matter where they are in the world.
